Measures
February 15 to March 6, 2007
Opening on Feb. 15 at the Finale (Megamall) is "Measures" by Bembol dela Cruz.
Unflinching in his portrayal of disorder and ruin and with an acute historical
and politcal sense, the artist surveys the destructions that took place in the US,
the Philippines and Lebanon among other places, examining how "measures,"
meant to promote order and stability, ironically inflict more harm than good.
Positioned on the various sites of chaos on the canvas, the school-type rulers
seem impotent in calibrating the enormity of loss. As a stroke of remembrance,
the title of each painting is composed of numbers that came from the date of bombing
and devastation of the specified place.
