In Geraldine Javier's "The most beautiful memories are
those of childhood," on view at the Finale Art
Gallery, the artist dips her foot into the terrain of
the unexplored, the windy spaces of memory, and comes
up with richly detailed portraits of a child or
herself, stranding speechless in either sorrow or
reverie. Their backs turned to the viewer and
sometimes wrapped with a blanket to signify the biting
cold, they inhabit a sliding world where toy horses
are caught in the branches of trees and every blade of
grass bristles with thoughtfulness and melancholy.
Intricately nuanced and echoing with a look of
permanent loss, the works open us to a brief but
undivided view of innocence, even of elusive bliss,
edged by shadowy waves.
