CURRENT SHOW
Finale Art File
Gated
April 10 to 30, 2007
Opening on April 10 at the Finale Art File is "Gated
2," a suite of oil paintings by Elaine Roberto-Navas.
An ongoing project depicting this ornate and
functional part of the abode that permits entry and
exit, the exhibit first opened in Singapore where art
critic Audrey Wong remarked that Roberto-Navas sees
gates as "expressive objects of beauty that stand out
from the ordinary urban landscape." From wooden gates
to metal gates to rusty gates to damaged gates, the
artist evokes their unique, rudimentary details-the
peeling paint, the corrugated surface, the material
taking the brunt of the elements-and transforms them
into well-calculated, abstract expressions of a self
seeking both passage and departure. The exhibit is on
view until April 30.
