Overland
March 6 to 25, 2008
In Lena Cobangbang’s exhibit titled “Overland” at the Finale Art Gallery, the artist, instead of capturing nuggets of an already existing world, simulates her notion of “heaven and idealized states” through scale-model sets, crafting sceneries of surreal and haunting quality. Made up of the simplest materials such as gelatin, the “worlds” she fashioned and captured in photographs were un-premeditated and specific, nourished by an abrupt and avid imagination in pursuit of its volatile forms. Documented as photographs, they achieve what the artist refers to as “perfect equilibrium or stasis,” singular narratives unimpeachable in their clarity and chaos.
