Planted Landscapes

Nona Garcia
July 9 to 21, 2008

In Nona Garcia's "Planted Landscapes," organized by Finale Art File and curated by Nilo Ilarde, the artist surveys the damage left by avalanching lahar, portraying tell-tale signs of human habitation: flaying roofs, broken awnings, windows half reduced to their size. Evoking nature's sweeping and transfiguring touch, the works serve as a warning to the impermance of our structures, provoking the recognition of a power far greater than us. As terrible documents of ruins, Garcia's paintings are alert and full of reckoning as they turn a clear eye on the vestiges left by actual lives, remote and uprooted from the scenery.

"Planted Landscapes" is on view until July 21.
