In "Stratus," opening on Sept. 18 at the Finale Art Gallery, Soler Santos offers a twin view of dread, drought and despair in his every canvas, the sky a threatening commotion of colors while beneath it is a rectangle of gnarled, exhausted branches that evoke inevitable cycles and the hostile emptying of seasons. Lessons in nature's terrifying and swift finalities, the works are pure from any subtext and irony, thus eschatological in their mood and manner, stirring at the viewer a combination of dread and white-heat wonder. "Stratus, " curated by Roberto Chabet, will run until Oct. 7.
