Opening at the Upstairs Gallery of Finale Art File (Warehouse 17, La Fuerza Compound, Gate 1, 2241 Pasong Tamo, Makati City ) on April 7 is Alvin Villaruel Zulu’s Time Games. The artist— fascinated with cosmic, meteorlogical and natural phenomena—this time investigates volcanic activities, the cloud of ash they billow in their wake, and the terrifying alterations they do on the landscape. The people, rendered small and insignificant compared to the event, see the phenomenon not as a calamity but a condition for curiosity. Instead of running for their lives, they are depicted doing their tasks of observation, as if they have been complete exorcised of terror. It’s as if modernity has rendered them immobile and completely numb, depicting the raging violence of nature as another source of entertainment.
