Mischievous Evidence
by At Maculangan
August 12 to 30, 2009
On view at the Video Room of the Finale Art File is At Maculangan’s “Mischievous Evidence.” In this exhibit, the artist presents photographs that seem to have been taken in sequential order but bereft of a running narrative. It is the mysterious gaps, the “less- than-perfect scenes” revolving around the actual event that the photographer wants to capture, inviting the onlooker to supply the missing story line. These “unstudied and unrehearsed snapshots” form part of what he considers as his deeply personal work, creating a veritable archive of off-tangent, mysterious and resonant photo situations.

As a commercial photographer I shoot people who willingly smile at the camera and do exactly what I tell them to do. Although my assignments usually require that I take these picture- perfect photographs I also delight in exploring the less than perfect scenes that revolve around them. The parts that are less rehearsed; just like the behind the scenes of a movie. These unstudied snapshots I put aside as my personal work. When I am asked what my work is all about-I prefer to stay silent because I believe the most beautiful thing we can experience is still the mysterious.

At Maculangan is well known in the Philippine art scene as a photographer and a visual artist. Since 2004, he has been a regular contributor in Manila’s top glossies. His personal work is often intimate revolving around his family life, his immediate social milieu and the places where he lived and worked.
His background in the visual arts has also earned him a niche as an art and culture photographer of choice particularly for documentation of contemporary art, artists and exhibitions.
