Disconnecting the Dots
by Bea Camacho

June 9 - July 5, 2009

Opening on June 9 at the Finale Video Room is the second part of Bea Camacho's "Disconnecting the Dots." In this exhibit, the artist addresses ideas of distance and disconnection through works that examine the space that separates one person from another and also propose ways of making this space visible and tangible, in an effort to better understand it. Rather than attempting to create connections, these works deliberately expose the “in-between” and engage in a process of taking apart. In these works, the “space between” is not a void; but rather, it is rich with content and meaning.

The two-part exhibit problematizes distance as represented through a series of translations. The distance between two people could be represented by the time it takes to travel that distance by plane, the weight of the air that separates them or the number of days that have passed since they have last seen each other. Distance can also be implied using colors that correspond to the international dial codes of countries in a map that has been abstracted into a series of rectangles. In each case, there is a defined system of conversion. However, these systems may not be explicitly described. In some works, systems are implied by an apparent logic, but are left as unknowns to be decoded.

To further underline the themes of distance and disconnection, the exhibit itself has been split into parts. The first part of the exhibit is shown at 20 Square.
