Garbage
by Didit Robillo
July 9 - August 4, 2009
In Garbage, Didit Robillo seems to scavenge through a cornucopia of images with which to fill her canvas, creating a methodical rendition of man's generous waste. A sense of "horror vacui" assails her works, as if, by replicating discarded objects, the artist skirts around the notion of poverty. Instead of assailing our sense of disgust, the paintings ask us to examine the complexity implicit in her canvas--the patterns the shapes create against each other. What we see is not garbage but garbage transformed--a monumental heap of useless things that man has created without regard to his living environment and fellow human beings.
