Once Upon a Time and Other Stories

On view at the Upstairs Gallery of Finale Art File until March 7 is Felix Bacolor’s “Once Upon a Time and Other Stories.” In this exhibit, the artist seems to be merely playful in creating an assembly of installations composed of plastic toys salvaged from flea markets. Occasionally collated according to color or size and protected by an encasement, they look like figures in a natural science museum, triggering a host of associations. With some of the toys juxtaposed with violent images, the artworks reach a sinister pitch, portraying how innocence is constantly being threatened by the insensibilities of war, politics and destruction. A telling tale of the contemporary malaise, the exhibit bursts the seam of our mundane expectations, psycho-analyzing the motivation of man’s destructive pursuits and his voracious toying of natural orders.
