In Jojo Serrano’s “Abound,” the artist works with a preponderance of images that portray the chaos and dysfunction of contemporary life—a world inflicted with wars and commercialism, the humdrum affairs of people wading and drowning in stuff. His vivid and intense coloration turns his large-scale works into neon-light reminders of a certain doom, an ironic counterpoint in the routine deadening of the senses by advertisement and mass media. As an artist embarrassed by consumption, he holds to us a broken mirror to shock us into recognition.
