Despoil
by Lui Medina
January 8 to 24, 2009
On view until Jan. 24 at the Video Room is Lui Medina's exhibit, "Despoil." Composed of a suite of mixed media, the artist attempts to flesh out the lines from which the sacred and profane intersect, using materials related to worship, romance and eroticism. In circular surface, roses are smothered with wax, at once destroying their delicate nature but nonetheless preserving their beauty, asserting their mortality anointed with streaks of gold. The circular works are juxtaposed with squares framing areas of whiteness, pure and spiritual, save for the gold leafing that seems to leap out from nowhere, akin to the flash of thought in satori or spiritual enlightenment. Anchoring the works is a box with its spillage of wax and roses, proving that what is inside will inevitably tumble outward, revealing the hidden matrix of creation for all the eyes to see.
