Two
by Pardo de Leon
January 12 to 30, 2009
In the exhibit "Two," on view until January 30, Pardo de Leon juxtaposes two images of strikingly similar forms (Monalisa's lips vis-a-vis a pea pod, a ballerina's tutu vis-a-vis a poppy blossom) , fused, as if in space, with an identical background. The diptych generates a host of ideas: the binding universality of shape, the tenuous connections between living and non-living objects, the mental response to create associations, metaphorical or otherwise. Outright and frank as they may seem, the images seem to interlock in dialogue, revealing the lyric of their outline, keeping the tense strings between objects taut and humming.
