JAYSON OLIVERIA
Existential But Still Acceptable
January 8 to February 1, 2010
In Existential But Still Acceptable, Jayson Oliveria extends the definition of the artist from being a creator to also being a destroyer. His paintings—which reveal forms taken from pop-culture, history, and art—crawl with graffiti and in some cases, are mutilated with physical slashes on the canvas. The artist seems intent in obliterating the underlying figures with vandalism, the visual counterpart of commentary against traditional notions of balance, beauty and thoughtful presentation. Energetic in their disposition and essentially disruptive, the works demonstrate a violent intelligence in responding to the implicit chaos of the world and argue for the side of rawness, immanence and staggering multiplicity.
