Beneath the Surface
by Keiye Miranda

December 3 to 31, 2010

On view at the Upstairs Gallery of Finale Art File is Keiye Miranda's "Beneath the Surface." Continuing the theme of the artist's previous shows exploring artificial bodies of water, the abstract quality of bodies once submerged into pools, and the stark contrast between skin and watery surface, this exhibit, however, presents dreamlike, subterranean depths, where surreal details suddenly crop up to startle the veracity of the scene. The mysterious quality of the paintings is evoked by the deep blue color close to slate and the juxtapositions of details such as a nest and a bed with children. Contemplative of dark, slow-moving figures, haunting and partly elegiac, "Beneath the Surface" plunges from reality to see, with clear-eyed intensity, the stuff dreams are made of.
