Synonyms
Nona Garcia
May 7 to 30, 2010
In Nona Garcia’s “Synonyms,” the artist grapples with the seduction of scale, amplifying a wrecked car to epic proportions while reducing to the their utmost intensity, portraits of her friends with their backs turned to the viewer. More than range and fluency in shifting from focus to sprawl, from domestic concerns to cataclysmic events, the exhibit illustrates how reality is easily shaped by way of point-of-view: her mural, seen from a unique vantage point, may seem non-threatening, even remote, while her portraits, assembled in rows, crowd the vision with their multiplicity. Drained of color and almost free of distortions, Garcia’s works achieve a visceral quality, as if the artworks are photo-journalistic documents of destruction or, in the case of the portraits, full-bodied cartographic sketches of people who resist identity and disclosure.
