Heads Will Roll
by Paulo Vinluan

July 9 - , 2010

Located at the Upstairs Gallery, “Heads Will Roll” by Paulo Vinluan once again showcases the artist’s strong graphic imagination, with his figures (concatenation of humans and animals and other surreal components) unique to the world he has created: a vortex of geometric shapes, drips and hallucinatory swirls. More than pieces of psychedelia, his works are characterized by a satirical tone; the figures are allegorical creations for existential failures and degradations.

For this specific exhibit, the artist unlocks the notion of power, not merely as a vile, corrupting for force, but as a condition which is fleeting and promotes an illusion of grandeur. A main figure is seen enjoying the perks of power but at the same time is assailed by ragbag of limbs, animals, and clubbing instruments. Known for his decoupage technique, Vinluan this time directs the flatness of the canvas toward his aims, evoking the one-dimensionality of TV and other forms of everyday media. Texture is achieved by way of the materiality of paint and how it is controlled to behave in order to exemplify a dissolution or an apocalyptic coloring.
