Save Me From What I Want to Save
by Juan Alcazaren

July 1 - 27, 2010

In Save Me From What I Want to Save, on view at the Tall Gallery, Juan Alcazaren constructs what for him is the largest indoor installation piece he has made: the word SORRY spelled out by more than a hundred pieces of lamps and found objects affixed with bulbs, casting a spell-binding illumination reminiscent of neon billboards and other large-scale light sources. Individually, an object signifies the detritus of the consumer society, the useless merchandise thrown to accommodate the new which, in its own time, will also turn up in a garbage heap. But once refashioned finally as an artwork, the objects seem to generate a life of their own, asserting their validity and puncturing holes in our judgment in our consideration of the disposable. The utterance of pardon, however, is disruptive of the accusing stance: we can take that the artist and the artworks are saying the word, in their use of each other's facilities, involving the viewer.
