EXHIBITED WORKS
Tall Gallery, Warehouse 17, La Fuerza Compound
Always Wild, Still Wild
by GERALDINE JAVIER
March 4 to 26, 2011
On view at the Tall Gallery of the Finale Art File is Geraldine Javier’s Always Wild, Still Wild. Inspired by her childhood orchard (teeming with all sorts of fruit-bearing trees) and the movie Where the Wild Things Are, the show seeks to transform the gallery as a place of childhood wonder and reverie by featuring the natural world replete with mysterious animals (particularly the deer), their habitations (nests and trees), and rabbles of butterflies. A craft learned in childhood, tatting, comes prominent as strings upon strings of it dangle from antlers to evoke the process of molting. At the center of the exhibit is Javier’s self-portrait, a hammock garlanded with tatted forms. As opposed to her previous shows, Javier ventures into a more meditatively joyful territory in Always Wild, Still Wild, reconnecting with her irrevocable roots and showing the re-creative power of the imagination in summoning nature that inspires all art.
